In order to understand the function of our leg veins, we need to understand how blood circulation in our body works.
The human body must be supplied continuously with oxygen and nutrients so as to be able to maintain its vital functions. At the same time, the cells of the body must be freed of carbon dioxide and other waste products. It is blood circulation which fulfils both these functions. The transporting channels are the vessels which form a system of tubes in which the blood circulates. The energy for blood flow is provided by the pumping action of the heart.
The arteries carry blood away from the heart around the body to the capillaries, from where nutrients and oxygen flow out into the tissues.
Simultaneously, the veins collect blood and carry it back to the heart.
