Treatment options 4/4

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy or injection therapy is a non-surgical procedure in which a mild sclerosing agent is injected into either spider or varicose veins so that the vein walls stick together. The vein can no longer fill with blood and is therefore obliterated. As a result, blood is re-routed to a healthy vein, restoring proper vein circulation in the area. It takes no more than an hour at the maximum and could be done in a lunch break, if there is a suitable clinic close to your place of work. A few sessions may be required to obtain maximum benefit. It is important to follow up with compression hosiery in order to ensure a rapid and smooth recovery.

Foam-Sclerotherapy

Foam sclerotherapy is a new form of delivering the sclerosing agent to the problem vein. It tends to be used for larger varicose veins and has the consistency of shaving cream, which helps the treatment in two specific ways. First of all, the foam disperses blood within the vein, thereby enabling the full strength of the sclerosing agent to be in contact for an extended period of time with the vein wall without any form of dilution. Secondly, the foam is visible via ultrasound imaging and can be easily tracked and guided to the source of the problem in the vein.

Laser Therapy

Laser therapy utilizes very specific wavelengths of high-energy pulsed light to penetrate the skin without causing damage. The depth, size and colour of the problem vein determines the wavelength, power, pulse width and pulse interval that the vein is using. Laser light heals the vein, causing it to coagulate, close off and be absorbed by the body. This therapy option is appropriate for minor cases of leg spider veins.

Radiofrequency Occlusion Therapy

Radiofrequency Occlusion treats the vein by heating it, therefore causing it to contract and then close. It is a procedure with a good success rate and low complication rate. It is important to follow up with compression hosiery in order to ensure a rapid and smooth recovery.
