Restless legs syndrome (RLS) are more common during middle and older age. The mechanism is unclear but may involve disturbances in the central nervous system. In RLS, patients complain of a creeping or crawling sensation in the lower extremities when reclining.
To relieve symptoms, patients move the affected extremity by stretching, kicking, or walking. As a result, they have difficulty falling asleep, repeated nocturnal awakenings, or both.
Consult your doctor if you need more information.
(Nocturnal) calf cramps may be relieved immediately by firm passive stretching of the involved muscle (e.g., foot stretch up). Those cramps are caused by an imbalance in body electrolytes. To rebalance electrolytes you can drink a light salt water solution (1L water containing 10 g salt). Adequate conditioning, acclimatization, and appropriate management of salt balance can help to prevent cramps. Intake of oral magnesium may also help to prevent spasms. Consult your physician or pharmacist for more information.
